A dad bikes with his son on Roxas Boulevard, supports his happiness

“Ganito naman talaga tayong mga magulang, we support our kids lalo pa kung alam natin na sasaya sila.”

(Parents are like this, we support our kids especially when we know that they’ll be happy.)

It’s good to see parents who encourage their young kids to bike. We usually catch them practicing or having fun short rides on parks or inside their neighborhood. So it was an unusual sight when we spotted biker dad Jon-jon cycling along Roxas Boulevard with his 11-year-old son Yuan.

“I always want to ride with Yuan. Once or twice a week kami mag-bike,” Jon-jon told First Bike Ride. “Yuan is very alert sa road and he’s athletic kaya hindi ako natatakot na kasama siya.”

Despite Yuan’s bravery, we still saw how protective Jon-jon was with his son. Serving as a layer of security from cars, he was beside Yuan most of the time with his hand assisting the younger biker’s back for support.

Jon-jon taught Yuan how to ride a bicycle last year when the boy showed interest with the activity.
“My son plays basketball everyday. It’s his first love. I am proud na magaling siya mag-basketball. I am happier when he tried to learn biking,” Jon-jon said. “I always tell him na magandang form of exercise ang biking. He’s very athletic. He even tried Taekwondo when he was 7 years old.”

The father observed that after cycling for a few months, his son became more disciplined and focused.

He added, “I am lucky enough that my son and I share the same interests when it comes to sports. We both love basketball and biking. Nakakapagpapawis na kami, nakakapag-bond pa kaming dalawa.”

We are very much impressed with Yuan’s courage. Not everyone, even adults, get to have that confidence to ride on roads with big cars. We asked him if he gets afraid with Manila’s traffic and he answered proud.

“I am not afraid to ride a bike. I am used to it na po. I am confident po because Papa is with me,” Yuan said. “He supports me always. Ako po ang favorite niyang kasama mag-bike.”

Aren’t these two adorable? Daddy Jon-jon rides with his mountain bike while Yuan uses a mini mountain bike.
